Holy Bhagavad Gita

Our definition of seva is: “Service which is given without consideration of anything in return, at the right place and time to one that is qualified, with the feeling that it is one’s duty, is regarded as the nature of goodness.” — Bhagavad Gita 17.20

First there is the statement in which Shri Krishna explains that the devotees who reach the Divine are the ones who are constantly engaged in the well-being of all beings (sarva-bhūta-hite ratā) (Gita 12.4). The idea of performing selfless action (karma-yoga) as a service to the Divine has been developed in the 3rd chapter (e.g. 3.9).

Furthermore, the idea of “yajña” (worship) as expressed in 3.13 refers, according to traditional Sanskrit commentaries, to five kinds of yajñas which include n-yajña(worship or service of human beings).
From these statements collectively it is easy to conclude that in the understanding of the Gita, a true devotee is someone who selflessly serves the Divine present in the heart of all beings, a conclusion similar in spirit and essence to the statement in question: “Nara Sevā, Nārāyaa Sevā” which means “Service to a human is the same as service to the Divine, the supreme abode of all human beings.”
